If you regularly apply liquid fertilizer, weed control or other lawn treatments, upgrading from a small pump sprayer to a battery-powered backpack sprayer can make lawn care much easier.

After using a 2-gallon pump sprayer for years, we decided to test the PetraTools HD4000 4-gallon battery backpack sprayer. We purchased the sprayer ourselves, put it together, tested the different nozzles and used it for several lawn applications.

So, is the PetraTools HD4000 one of the best backpack sprayers for homeowners?

After putting it through some real-world testing, there is a lot to like.

What Is the PetraTools HD4000 Backpack Sprayer?

The PetraTools HD4000 is a 4-gallon battery-powered backpack sprayer designed to eliminate the constant pumping required with a traditional manual sprayer.

Instead of stopping every few minutes to build pressure, the battery-powered pump maintains pressure while you spray. That can make a significant difference when treating an entire lawn.

The HD4000 includes several accessories and spray tips, allowing you to adjust the sprayer depending on the application.

Inside the box, you get the backpack sprayer, battery charger, hose, spray wand, wand holders and multiple nozzle attachments.

There is even a screwdriver included for assembly.

How Hard Is the HD4000 to Assemble?

Setup is relatively simple.

One of the first steps is installing the two wand brackets on the side of the tank. One bracket holds the upper portion of the wand while the second has a stop that supports the bottom.

The brackets attach with the included screws and nuts.

One tip: don’t overtighten these brackets.

Getting them snug by hand should be enough. Using a drill and overtightening them could potentially damage the plastic.

Next, the hose connects to the sprayer and then attaches to the spray handle. The wand threads into the top of the handle.

Once everything is connected, the sprayer is basically ready to go after the battery has been charged.

How Does the Spray Handle Work?

The handle includes a locking mechanism that makes continuous spraying easier.

You can operate the trigger manually when you only want to spray occasionally. However, you can also lock the trigger in the spray position.

That’s particularly helpful when treating a large lawn.

Instead of holding the trigger down for an entire application, you can lock it and concentrate on maintaining a consistent walking speed and spray pattern.

What Features Does the PetraTools HD4000 Have?

There are several small features on the HD4000 that make it more convenient to use.

One of our favorites is the large fill opening.

The larger opening includes a filter that helps keep debris from getting into the tank. There is also a second smaller opening. Both openings lead to the same 4-gallon tank.

Inside the smaller lid is another helpful addition: a measuring cup.

When mixing liquid lawn products, having a measuring cup built directly into the sprayer means one less thing you need to carry around or hunt down in the garage.

One Feature We Don’t Love

There is one design issue we noticed almost immediately.

The gallon markings on the side of the tank are extremely difficult to see.

There are markings indicating the amount of liquid inside, but they blend into the tank so much that you may have trouble reading them.

A simple solution would be to mark the gallon lines with a permanent marker so they are easier to see when mixing applications.

It’s a relatively small complaint, but clearer markings would make the tank much easier to fill accurately.

How Do You Adjust the Pressure?

The HD4000 gives you two ways to operate the pump.

The first is the red power switch.

Turning that switch on essentially gives you full pressure.

The second option is the adjustable pressure dial.

With the main switch off, you can use the dial to gradually increase or decrease the spraying pressure.

That gives you more control when you’re working around plants or using an application where full pressure isn’t necessary.

The important thing to remember is that these are two different operating modes.

If you want adjustable pressure, use the dial. If you simply want full power, use the red switch.

How Well Does the HD4000 Spray?

This is where the HD4000 really impressed us.

We tested several of the included spray attachments using water before trying the sprayer with lawn products.

Adjustable Shower Nozzle

The shower-style nozzle provides plenty of water at full pressure.

It can also be adjusted to change the spray pattern, making it useful for applications where you want broader coverage.

Adjustable Mist and Stream Nozzle

The adjustable mist nozzle was one of the more surprising attachments.

Tightened down, it produces a fine mist.

Loosen it and the spray turns into a strong stream.

During our test, the stream easily traveled around 20 to 25 feet.

That could be useful if you need to reach a taller or more distant area without standing directly beside it.

Fan Nozzle

For lawn applications, the fan nozzle may be the most useful attachment.

It produces a broad, even spray pattern that works extremely well for covering grass.

The coverage was noticeably better than what we were used to getting from a small handheld pump sprayer.

The biggest adjustment is learning the correct walking speed.

Because the sprayer puts out a substantial amount of liquid, you’ll want to calibrate how quickly you walk so you’re applying the appropriate amount of product across the lawn.

Once you get used to that, the fan nozzle makes covering larger sections of grass much easier.

Is the PetraTools Backpack Sprayer Comfortable?

A 4-gallon backpack sprayer can get heavy.

how comfortable is the petratools hd4000 backpack sprayer

Four gallons of water alone weighs more than 30 pounds, not including the sprayer itself.

Fortunately, the HD4000 has plenty of padding.

During testing, we didn’t notice uncomfortable pressure points, hard edges or pieces digging into the back.

The controls are also positioned where they are relatively easy to reach while wearing the sprayer.

As you use the product in the tank, the backpack naturally gets lighter as well.

For homeowners treating a typical residential lawn, the backpack design is significantly more convenient than carrying a small pump sprayer around the yard.

How Long Does the HD4000 Battery Last?

Battery life was another standout feature.

PetraTools advertises that the sprayer can handle approximately 200 gallons or six to eight hours of spraying before it needs to be recharged.

We didn’t independently run 200 gallons through the sprayer in one sitting, but we did use it for several different applications across multiple days.

The battery never ran out.

In our experience, battery life wasn’t something we really had to think about. We charged it initially, used it repeatedly and it simply continued working.

For a residential user applying roughly four gallons to a lawn at a time, the battery should provide plenty of capacity between charges.

Is a Backpack Sprayer Better Than a Pump Sprayer?

After using both, the difference is substantial.

A 2-gallon pump sprayer can absolutely get the job done. They’re inexpensive, simple and useful for smaller applications.

But when you’re regularly treating an entire lawn, manually pumping the tank and constantly refilling two gallons at a time gets old.

The HD4000 gives you:

  • A larger 4-gallon capacity
  • Battery-powered pressure
  • Adjustable PSI
  • Multiple spray patterns
  • Comfortable backpack straps
  • Continuous spraying
  • Long battery life
  • Wide fan coverage for lawn applications

For someone who frequently puts down liquid lawn treatments, those conveniences make the upgrade worthwhile.

What Are the Pros and Cons of the PetraTools HD4000?

After assembling, testing and using the HD4000 for multiple lawn applications, these were the biggest advantages and disadvantages we noticed.

Pros:

  • Strong spray pressure
  • Excellent fan pattern for lawn treatments
  • Adjustable PSI
  • Multiple useful nozzle attachments
  • Long battery life
  • Comfortable padded backpack
  • 4-gallon capacity
  • Built-in measuring cup
  • Filter inside the large fill opening
  • Continuous spray option
  • Good overall build quality
pros and cons to the petratools hd4000 backpack sprayer

Cons:

  • Gallon markings on the tank are difficult to see
  • A full 4-gallon tank will naturally be fairly heavy
  • It takes a little practice to determine the right walking speed and application rate

For us, the positives significantly outweighed the negatives.

Is the PetraTools HD4000 Worth It?

If you’re still using a small pump sprayer for full-lawn applications, the PetraTools HD4000 backpack sprayer is a major upgrade.

The biggest advantage isn’t any one nozzle or feature. It’s how much easier the entire application process becomes.

You fill the tank, put the sprayer on your back, turn it on and start walking.

There’s no stopping every few minutes to pump the tank back up to pressure.

The fan nozzle provides excellent coverage for grass, the adjustable pressure gives you additional control and the battery lasts long enough that most homeowners probably won’t need to worry about charging it after every application.

Our biggest complaint is still the difficult-to-read gallon markings. We’d love to see PetraTools make those more visible.

Aside from that issue, the HD4000 has proven to be a rugged, comfortable and extremely convenient lawn sprayer.

If you regularly apply liquid lawn fertilizer like Neighbor’s Envy or other lawn treatments and want to make the process faster and easier, the PetraTools HD4000 is absolutely worth considering.
